THE CHANGING FACE OF SOHO

The Changing Face of Soho—described as a “multi-media” mural exhibition—was installed in the Broadway/Lafayette subway station and addressed the developing nature of the neighborhood. Sponsored by the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s Creative Stations (Arts for Transit) program, it was coordinated by Kristin Reed.

Nineteen professional artists worked on the project which consisted of an 8’x 32’ painted mural, a 9’ x 8’ ceramic mural, and nine 4’ x 8’ individual artist panels in sculptural, photographic, ceramic and paint media. The artists who created the individual panels were chosen by a jury representative of local ethnic and arts groups.

The brightly colored painted mural chronicles the people, activities and architecture of Little Italy, Lower Broadway and Soho. The ceramic mural wittily describes the plight of an artist who again and again loses her living and working quarters in Soho to commercial expansion.

Artists not represented by the project details are Elizabeth Grajales, Ed Herman, Suellen Johnson, Nina Kuo, Ginger Legato and Rachel Romero.
