<...........................................................................> | Established in 1983, Artmakers Inc. is an artist-run, politically oriented community mural organization that creates high quality public art relevant to the lives, work and concerns of people in their neighborhoods. In its 25 years, Artmakers has created over 40 murals in collaboration with block associations, health care and mental health facilities, public schools, community gardens, LDCs, homeless shelters, day care centers and other arts organizations. As an artist-run organization, Artmakers has no paid staff and monies are generally raised on a project by project basis. Artmakers artists and board of directors, ranging in age from 25 to 70, reflect the cultural diversity of New York City. Their collective work with the city’s community and cultural organizations spans the last four decades. Many are teaching artists and educators in New York City schools and museums, as well as exhibiting artists. They frequently advise community groups wanting to create murals and have freely given their time to groups that lack funding, providing on-site visits, design workshops, and production advice. On occasion, Artmakers has undertaken 4 to 5 day volunteer mural projects on timely, pressing issues.
